This project of yours has completely entranced me! I gave one of my writing groups an assignment/prompt based on your oeuvre--they had to write a micro memoir with their age as the word count. (one of my writers is a mere 30… I told him to write two!)
Just as fabulous as you were on the Oldster. I do so appreciate the very, very short pieces, as that's my preferred length as well. I do both 50 word stories and 100 word stories. Yours are just GEMS! Have you considered self-publishing? I've finished my 44,000 manuscript and sent it off for a developmental edit. I tell you, these long book-length pieces (mine is even too short at 44,000) just do me in. Completely wear me out. Perhaps I am more suited to the length that suits you? I should try posting some of my mini stories, I guess.
Thanks so much, Rose! I have no advice about length. I write stuff of all different lengths. This was an experiment that I ran with and it's exciting that people are responding. The only caution about posting your stuff is that, if you do want to ultimately get it publishing traditionally, it can work against you. You can research percentages that publishers accept for "previously published" or "excerpted" work. Good luck with it! (Oh, yeah, I'm holding out for now on self-pub for $$ reasons.)
Oh, I do understand! I must have spent about 18 months trying to decide if I should go traditional or self-publish. But in the end, I decided I might be dead by the time I got an agent, the agent shopped it around, the publisher went through various editing versions, then meeting their schedules, etc. I'm a bit too long in the tooth for all that. Plus, I would like to have a say in various things, like the title and the cover and how it looks. I think you have to be ready to let go of those decisions with a traditional publisher. They would have been my first choice, but as I say, I feel time is of the essence at this point. (Foot on banana peel, etc.!)
Understood! I'm not looking for an agent. Lots of indie and small presses will accept unagented submissions. Pros and cons to all approaches, no right answer. I suppose. I know what you mean about retaining control, though!
Thanks so much, Jeff! When you see the final 70, you'll see why these ended up not fitting in--extraneous to the arc or redundant in theme. Stuff like that. Tough decisions! But it's a joy to share them, which is something I never considered at the time. Bon voyage (again)!
Thank you so much, Jill! That means a lot. That was one of the first ones I wrote, actually. I was going to include a series of "The Story of My Childhood" micros, but the book evolved differently. So glad to finally share it!
Thanks for the info, Polly. That's great! You're on my list of folks to read/connect with after your Oldster comment. I'm not in a financial position to self-publish at this point, sadly, but maybe I'll start buying lottery tickets?
Also I think your micro memoir of 70 words is so cool. It's given me an idea for another book based on some notes, letters, and weekly calendars I have from my grandmother, telling her story through the snapshots into her life.

Ah, this is fabulous. Thank you, Cindy! (LOL re: 30) I wrote a 20-word piece for a friend's zine once. Not impossible!
I really love these, they are so fun. Thanks for sharing them here.
Thank you so much for reading!

Congrats! Enjoy the ride… 💫✨
Thanks, Nik! It's been a week...
These darlings didn't make the cut? #s2&3 took my breath away. Well done, and congrats on your success. Your hard work is paying off!

Congrats, Deb, on the amazing boost from Oldster! Fully deserved. 😊
Thanks so much, Adam!
I love your snippets! Your mother is revealed in 70 words. What a brilliant vehicle for memoir. Bravo!

Leave his pleasure in her hands…. Says it all! Thanks Deb
Ha ha! I will tell you privately about the origin of that line, Ginny! :) Thanks for reading.
I am having a great experience with Atmosphere Press publishing my writing about time with my mother. I recommend!

Thanks! So many possibilities nowadays!
